'Reliance and Idea have most clogged networks'

New Delhi: Reliance Telecom, Reliance Communications and Idea Cellular have the most congested networks; meanwhile Tata Teleservices has the least network congestion levels, according to an analysis by Telecommunications Regulation Authority of India (TRAI), for the period of January-March this year.



According to the TRAI, the congestion levels were above the permissible limits in some 76 places surveyed, which is high as compared to 66 places in previous quarter.

The levels had steadily come down and fallen to an all-time low during October- December '08, when networks were observed congested in only 66 places.

Congestion in networks results in call drops and deterioration in voice quality. Also, it is the primary reason of consumers making repeated calls to get through.

TRAI tracks congestion by evaluating the levels at the points of interconnection (PoI), the places where mobile traffic is exchanged between the networks of different operators. Congestion level is important parameters and signifies the ease by which customer's connect to another networks. The benchmark is set at less than 0.5 percent for this parameter, implying that in every 200 calls between two operators; only one call should face the problem of congestion.

As of March 2009, Reliance Telecom and Idea both have congestion in 18 PoIs each, followed by Reliance Communications (16 POIs) and Vodafone (11 POIs). The most affected circles due to PoI are Bihar (13 PoIs), Andhra Pradesh and Kolkata (8 PoIs each) Assam and Himachal Pradesh (7 PoIs each) and Mumbai (6 PoIs).

Although Bharti Airtel had the most congested network, it has shown lowest congestion levels, indicating rapid turnaround. It stands at second place followed by the Tatas in terms of the least congested networks.

Cancel Reader's comments(20) 1: Im using Idea cllular from last 9 months...i have used all other service providers service..but among all of them Idea is the pathetic service...i have no words to say abt their services..70% of my calls are call drops and voice quality problem..i have repeatedly given complaint on the same and i got a silly answer i.e.,(there is not tower near your location and we have to fix a tower to clear your problem)...But in one thing they are very prompt paisa vasul..they are very prompt in that not even a single day delay..even if customer has some problem with thier network also...Im pissed off with this connection..due to non avialbility of postpaid services of other service providers im using this mobile...i suggest my friendsand all the public not to use Idea..really it will change your life.

2: hi , i have been using TATA Indicom, for the last four years, with any call drop,and full network connection any where.i have seen the people facing problem with all other networks while i am enjoying with my network. i feel that TATA indicom is the best in india.... provided you have a good hand set.

5: Idea is having the worst nightmare network , I can not call ISD and many times call drops in std. Customer care is very poor long with long waitng queue. I am waiting to for TRAI to announce the portabiliy of Phone Conection among service provides

7: Congestion per say should not be confused with the quality of the network. With no calls there would be no congestion. In fact it implies that the Reliance and Idea are in great demand and therefore the congetion, provided other things like network elements remain same. We all know that Reliance has the best network in this part of the world. In other words it can be implied that Reliance and Idea have great networks therefore great demand leading to congetion.

11: Good. I found idea in above list. When last month, the news appeared about 2 operators making the most out of call dropping, i thought of idea only. Because they are the master manipulators in tariff, service, quality and money. Good I am happy for idea. Idea cheats!

Sorry for that blunt answer, but i mean it, coz i have been using Reliance and I find it to be most Reliable when I travel long distances, into the deep bushes or say hills, Than Vodafone and Airtel, Who call themselves to be the GIANTS in telecomm industry.And its quiet shocking to c tat teleservices to reach that height! 13:Meera, i think u r speaking about Network Coverage bot not congestion. The survery is done on points where there the congestion is high. And more over when u travel the people connecting thru that network might be less and u can recieve the call with clarity.

I am having two reliance numbers which I think the most reliable service provider.
Earlier I have used all these Airtel and Hutch (Now Vodafone).
Not only the service is comparable but also the tariff is much much better than any other player.

15: I agree with you both. Idea and reliance networks and services are great. Airtel and Hutch connections were nightmares when I used them. Ultimately I changed to Idea in 2006 and still using the same phone numbers.

16: Am having 6 reliance connections including landline connections. i also have 2 tata landline connections. have also used airtel, idea, vodafone and bsnl connections. am a reliance customer from 2004 and have used the network even in andaman islands. honestly i haven't found any better network and customer service and automation levels in operation than reliance. how it is being classified as the most congested network escapes practical experience

19: I am a Reliance GSM user since June and I have experienced the worst network problems. I have registered many complaints and no use. I am not able to make any STD calls from 8:30 PM till 11:30PM (especially to kerala).

20: Idea networks were setup by AT&T Wireless, and still remain the best. PoIs for Idea / Reliance are not in a very big lead compared to the best ones.. Like Vodafone is on 11 and Idea / Reliance on 18.. That's not a valid variation to make such a huge judgement by TRAI!
